You must have often heard parents forbidding their children from consuming coffee. They would say something along the lines of that it would make you shorter or would not allow you to attain a good height as are often heard. The question is how much reality is hidden in these statements. Does caffeine stunt growth and if so, what is its mechanism?

Caffeine is a stimulant that would increase alertness and would make a person active. When a child consumes this stimulant, he will become irritant and hyperactive. The logic is that during sleep, a large amount of growth hormones is released. When a person does not sleep for an appropriate amount of time, such secretions are limited, thereby leading to stunted growth.

The easy way out of this situation would be to ensure that caffeine consumption is restricted to a limited amount. One or two cup a day would not make a big deal of difference. However, when a large amount is consumed on a daily basis, problems would begin to manifest. Therefore, if one wishes to ensure that stunted growth does not pose an issue for him and his health remains optimal at all times, he should ensure that the amount of caffeine that forms part of his diet is limited. We do not mean to imply that you let go of the beverage entirely. Just be cautious of the amount you intake, which would ensure that you do not have to suffer the harmful effects that can be incurred due to the stimulant.
