Stunt growth is a situation that results mainly due to malnutrition in childhood. Stunted people have short height and less weight as compared to other people. Once achieved, stunt growth can never be reversed.

Dangers of stunting growth

The dangerous thing is that stunted people may also have undeveloped organs, which can lead to various diseases, malfunctions and even death. Some people try to stunt their growth in order to achieve a desired body shape, but this can be very harmful. Once you have stunted your growth, you won’t be able to fill the gap ever.

You must know that stunt growth can be achieved through severe malnutrition. This means that someone who doesn’t have access to a complete balanced diet is likely to become stunted. According to UNICEF, stunting can occur during the first three years of life. Stunted growth can destroy a person’s life and ability to perform activities. It has the following harmful effects:

  • Weakness
  • Undeveloped bones
  • Weak immune system
  • Disproportionate height to mass ratio
  • Learning difficulties
  • Undeveloped organs

Weight lifting isn’t possible in childhood, which is an important part of exercise and helps to achieve ideal body shape and weight. Many young athletes believe that stunt growth and weight lifting are interrelated.

This is not true; a child’s growth can be stunted due to human error, coaching mistakes, injuries during exercise and a lack of education. Weight lifting is completely safe and it builds muscles and strengthens your bones. However, care should be taken when lifting weights in order to reduce the risks of injury. As a young boy, you must not lift weights without adequate training and coaching. In order to dissolve the myth about weight lifting, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement saying ‘Bodybuilding will NOT stunt your growth’.

Weight lifting and its effects on growth plates

The growth plates or epiphyseal plates cause the bones to grow. There are cartilages at the end of the bones that keep on regenerating and dividing throughout a child’s development stages. This process of regeneration stops when you’ve achieved full height. These growth plates can be damaged due to improper weight lifting, making a relation between stunt growth and weight lifting. Weight lifting always has a positive impact on the growth plates, but if done wrongly, they can cause injury to the plates and cause your growth to be stunted.

Does weight lifting enhances your growth?

There is no evidence that weight lifting can increase your growth. If you are a young weightlifter, it can strengthen your bones and build muscles, but if your bones have already fused together, then you have achieved your maximum growth. You can do stretching exercises during your growth period. Stunt growth can be avoided by taking proper nutrition, having adequate sleep, and exercising.
